Jazz Singers Jam Session

Hosted by: Typhanie Monique
(Matt Lewis will be hosting
this month's jam)

Typhanie will be hosting a monthly jazz jam session for vocalists. Limited availability, sign up at Katerina’s the night of the session. Various musicians will be showcased.

Chicago’s next major jazz artist to take flight she affirmed that not all of today's jazz singers are content to dwell on saccharine love songs. In an eclectic assortment of originals and covers, Monique applied top-notch jazz singing to poetic social commentary.    Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune

Since 1998, Typhanie Monique has been a tour de force on the Chicago music scene as a vocalist, bandleader and songwriter. The soulful, honey-voiced chanteuse is one of Chicago’s hardest-working musicians. She has performed at every major venue in the Chicago club scene over the past 10 years, leading legendary groups such as SUMO, Peking Turtle, Mr. Egg Germ, Jive Council, Choral Thunder, the T. Monique Quartet and the Typhanie Monique & Neal Alger Duo.

Over the past four years, Typhanie has devoted herself to her primary passion – jazz–and has made her mark on the international jazz scene with longtime musical partner Neal Alger, one of Chicago’s finest improvising guitarists. Their creative synergy began in 2000 when Monique asked Alger to be a sideman in her jazz quartet and to occasionally take the lead guitar role with her original funk outfit Peking Turtle. Monique quickly realized the musical dynamic between herself and Alger in January 2003 when the two were invited to reside weekly at the highly acclaimed Pop’s for Champagne, where they fused and polished “Tymoneal” and held court for over 3 years. In 2004, Typhanie teamed with Alger to record her first jazz CD, Intrinsic (Blujazz Records). Intrinsic did more than just capture the duo’s organic, soul-infused flavor in an intimate studio setting; it received national radio play, got the attention of the press and landed them national touring opportunities.  2007 has been an incredible year thus far for Typhanie Monique. It began with a new CD, In This Room. Monique and Alger took a different approach with their second release, collaborating with world-class musicians such as Tom Kennedy (Dave Weckl Band), Ernie Adams (Al Di Meola) and Brazilian artist Paulinho Garcia.

This year alone, Typhanie has performed at the prestigious Chicago Jazz Festival, the Stevens Point Jazz Festival, and the Old Town School of Folk Music opening for jazz saxophonist Chris Potter. She has also toured the U.S. with Alger promoting their latest release.  In July 2007, Typhanie took flight on an international solo journey after being invited to teach and perform in Moscow, Russia. There, she played with some of Russia’s top jazz musicians including saxophonist Oleg Kireyev and pianist Vladimir Nesterenko and performed in Moscow’s top jazz clubs.

Thelonious Monk Tribute

8pm

Film Documentary:

"Thelonious Monk:
Straight, No Chaser"
(1989)

Director: Charlotte Zwerin

Documentary about legendary jazz pianist/composer Thelonious Monk. Much of the film is centered around the six months of footage cinematographer Christian Blackwood shot of Monk in 1967-68. The footage reveals a lot about Monk's personality, including his dramatic mood swings, his eccentric behavior, as well as his sense of humor. The footage also shows Monk "behind the scenes" in the studio and on tour in Europe. Interviews, photos and many of Monk's songs round out this biography.

Steve Million
Plays Monk
Live at Katerina's
($5 Cover)

Million's a rare prize. His piano playing is distinct, intelligent, emotionally generous, swinging, shaped by timbres and rhythms that speak of his passion for the music of Thelonious Monk and his great respect for progenitors like Duke Ellington, Cedar Walton, and Paul Bley. His compositional skills are every bit as sharp and persuasive as the spry, intricate dance of his fingers on the keys, and evidence an uncommonly fertile musical mind. The Chicago Reader's Neil Tesser, one of his earliest supporters, has noted, "Million shapes both his improvisations and his compositions like a careful sculptor."

Elaine Dame & Tom Hope (No Cover)

"Her joy in the act of singing is obvious throughout the entirety of "Comes Love."  Dame combines a freshness of approach, like the unpredictability of shifting meters used to insert tension and increase the excitement of "Yesterdays," with an unaffected fondness for the music she sings.  That fondness is evident in the unadorned respect she pays for a classic song like "What'll I Do?"  The result is a clear-eyed approach to her material that remains accessible to a broad cross section of listeners, potentially enlarging the audience for jazz"  – Jazz Improv Magazine

"Blessed with such purity of sound that clarions could take lessons, Dame expresses wide open honesty, and her clarity is matched note for note by her imagination..." – Jazz Times

Tom Hope, Jazz pianist, was born and raised in Houston, studied music at North Texas State U., and was a U. S. Army bandsman.  He lived and worked in Los Angeles in the 70's and is a Chicagoan since 1976.  An experienced accompanist, he has a repertoire of thousands of tunes in all keys, with an emphasis on the Great American Songbook.

Tom has performed with Barrett Deems, Arnett Cobb, Scott Hamilton, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, Ira Sullivan, Ken Peplowski, Ed Polcer, Red Holloway, Lee Castle, Richie Cole, Al Grey, Britt Woodman and Charlie Persip, as well as singers such as Jaye P. Sabina L. Lilly ($5 Cover)

A complete singer and true Gemini, Sabina is an in-demand professional church musician and classical soloist as well as a jazz vocalist. “For me the different genres go hand in hand,” Sabina says of her musical personality. “The classical technique has given me healthy vocal endurance and continually opens doors to new creative expression. The jazz approach allows me to react in the moment when singing classical material, especially pieces I frequently sing, which leads to an authentic and musical presentation.” Another side of Sabina’s musical persona is revealed through “Let the Music Speak”, a collection of original material written and performed by Sabina. The CD features poetic lyrics and a sophisticated harmonic sense. These are brought to life by Sabina’s unique jazz singing approachan effortless blending of the stylistic and vocal flexibility of Basia, the lightness and quirkiness of Sheila Jordan and the occasional operatic touch, reminiscent of Sarah Vaughan. Julian Joseph, internationally acclaimed jazz pianist/composer and radio host of “Jazz Legends” on BBC, had this to say about her debut CD:  “…beautifully composed with great delicacy and accuracy in her approach… compositions are thoughtful, full of feeling and sentiment… lovely use of chromaticism and the use of groove and the ensemble work contrasted with simplicity of Sabina with just guitar…singing is so in-tune and a very strong cast of players!” Petra Van Nuis, a fresh voice of Chicago jazz working with such luminaries as Bradley Williams and Judy Roberts, sums up what many listeners have to say: “Sabina seems to glide through the songs with no effort, and her tunes are really creative and soulful and ridiculously catchy.  WOW!!”

Erwin Helfer, Skinny Williams, and Katherine Davis (Cover $5)

Katherine Davis grew up in Chicago, and began performing in 1979. Although she initially wanted to sing opera, her musical interests shifted to blues, jazz, and theater. Katherine is an entertaining performer. She has recently written and starred in an autobiographical theater production entitled "I Dream in Blues." In Nina Metz's Chicago Tribune theater review on February 10, 2006 she described Davis' performance as one that "... pulls you in with her haunting sweetness and utter lack of pretension." Katherine frequently performs with the Chicago Boogie Ensemble. When not performing, she is happily teaching the blues to children in Chicagoland public schools

Erwin Helfer has the chops, the feel, and the drive of the masters but he also pushes the "classic" blues piano music forward in a totally new direction. His music is graceful, spirited, and at times beautifully dissonant. Erwin's classical music training allows him to hear and interpret the simple, percussive blues and boogie piano style like no one else. Yet, his classical training is not overbearing on his own piano approach; that is, his playing is fluid and carefree, not stiff.

(From the liner note of the CD "I'm Not Hungry, but I like to eat - Blues"- The Sirens Records SR-5001)

A Chicago native, Williams embarked on his music career while still in his teens. Being 6’4” and 180 pounds, he was often referred to as “that skinny sax player,” thus earning him his nickname “Skinny”. And putting his first name William as his last name, hence Skinny Williams.

Skinny Williams performed with some of the biggest names in the business- from comedian Bernie Mac, Chaka Khan, Brian McKnight, George Duke and Sheila E to jazz and blues legends Buddy Guy, BB King and Bo Diddley. He performed all over the world with blues great Junior Wells, the Chicago Storm Horns, and as part of the old-school funk band The Ohio Players. He did a McDonalds television commercial for the then NBA champions The Chicago Bulls. Supplementing his income from live performances Williams recorded often for Chicago’s best blues and jazz legends.

Williams is one of the industry’s most respected and in-demand players, with critics comparing him to such greats as Stanley Turrentine, Ben Webster, Von Freeman and Boney James.

Matt Ulery, bass and compostions

Matt Ulery's 'Loom' has been captivating audiences for over 3 years. The first cd release, "Music Box Ballerina," which is due out in November 2007, has been a long time coming and highly anticipated. Loom, which consists of Thad Franklin on trumpet, Tim Haldeman on tenor saxophone, Jon Deitemyer on drums, Rob Clearfield on accordian and piano, Zach Brock on violin, and Matt Ulery on double bass and compositions, come together on "Music Box Ballerina" with eight original compositions of Ulery's which have been a part of the group's live repitoire for the last year. In addition, the mezmorizing, innovative, Polish jazz singer, Grazyna Auguscik, appears on one track of the album. Ulery has been performing with Auguscik for 3 years all over the U.S. and Europe as well as appearing on her two latest albums.

Loom is a modern, chamber music group.  The music, while coming from the American and European jazz tradition, including highly syncopated rhythms, modern jazz harmony, and improvisation, also influenced by folk music from the Americas and Eastern Europe as well as modern alternative and indie rock bands from all over the world.  Ulery's music has also been described, at times, as cinematic and fanciful.

Besides Loom, Ulery is the bassist for Eastern Blok, Grazyna Auguscik, and Zach Brock to name a few.

Grazyna Auguscik & Paulinho Garcia (Cover $5)

Singer, composer, arranger, and producer Grazyna Auguscik has won the praise and admiration of music critics,  jazz enthusiasts and even non-jazz audiences with a singular voice that speaks a universal language.

She is one of the most intriguing contemporary vocalists on today’s World jazz scene. Her elusive style challenges traditional definitions of jazz and show vocalist and musician without boundaries. Her unorthodox approach to rewriting classic works is at once a tribute to its authors as well as an adventure into uncharted territory. Her originals give a fresh taste of uncanny flavor.

Her professional music career She began in Europe, completed her studies in 1992 at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, and has since become a prolific collaborator sharing the stage with such jazz notables as Jim Hall, Michael and Randy Brecker, Bobby Enriquez, John Medeski, Paul Wertico, Kurt Rosenwinkel,  Robert Irving III, Michal Urbaniak, Terry Callier, Patricia Barber, Leni Stern, Eric Hochberg, John McLean,  David Onderdonk, Ernie Adams, Andrzej Jagodzinski, Jarek Bester and many others.

Amidst  her active schedule of performances in the U.S., Europe and Asia, Grazyna has managed to record, produce and distribute twelve albums, eight under her own record label, GMA Records, and appearing on as many projects as a guest.

Born in Belo Horizonte (capital of Minas Gerais, Brazil) Paulinho Garcia began his musical career at the age of nine as a singer in a Sunday children's program in his city's principal radio station, Radio Inconfidencia. In his teens, he performed as a house musician in all musical programs of the Radio network, Guarany--TV Itacolomy. He led his own band, Os Agitadores, and with them recorded his first two albums.

Until his arrival in the U.S. in 1979, Paulinho composed, arranged, produced, and performed jingles for HP Studios. Four of his commercials received national awards. Having moved to Chicago, he performed and recorded two albums with the band Made in Brazil. In 1991 he founded his own band, Jazzmineiro, whose eponymous 1996 CD received excellent reviews in the Chicago Tribune, Jazziz magazine, the Brazilian Music Review, and The Brazilians.

Paulinho was the recipient of the "Best jazz entertainer" award for the year 2001 by the Chicago Music Awards. His new recording "Homage", released in Tokyo on September 2002, was chosen as the best vocal CD in Japan for 2002 and was among the best 20 overall.

Paulinho has performed in many cities throughout the U.S. and abroad, touring Japan for six months with Made in Brazil. In 2000 and 2001 he toured Poland, Prague and Bratislava with singer Grazyna Auguscik. Paulinho also performed with saxophonist Greg Fishman (his partner in Two for Brazil). In 2001 they performed at the North Sea jazz festival in the Netherlands, the Singapore jazz festival and at the Holland American jazz cruise. In 2002 they performed in Hong Kong and Bangkok and most recently at the Fujitsu Concord jazz festival throughout various cities in Japan. It was then that Paulinho added Polish singer Grazyna Auguscik and named his new trio Three for Brazil. In 2003 Two for Brazil played Joe Siegel's jazz cruise "jazz party at sea" (October 26 thru November 2). His line up for 2004 included a tour of Poland in March, Bahamas in May, as well as performing at one of Japan's largest jazz festivals, Jazz Elite, with Three for Brazil (June 8th thru 21st), a second "jazz party at sea" cruise (October 23 thru 30th) and two TV concerts in the Netherlands in November. In 2005, In addition to many festivals throughout the USA, Paulinho performed in various cities in Poland, The Ukraine and Prague in April, The Singapore jazz festival in July, Joe Siegel’s jazz cruise to Alaska in September, the Jazz cruise of the Bahamas in October, and the Bangkok jazz festival in early February 2006. Paulinho just released two new CDs: a new solo CD (Tempo Feliz) and a CD of well known movie songs (Two for Brazil goes to the movies) in an inviting Brazilian style with his duo Two for Brazil.

FRANK SINATRA TRIBUTE!

Paul Marinaro Trio ($7 Cover)

Paul Marinaro, vocals

Joe Policastro, upright bass

Chris White, piano

(****) “… this singer twists a melody line and plays with it with an unabashed style and charisma that just doesn’t stop.”

“Marinaro wins you over from his very first note, his warm baritone gently caressing each note as he pays close attention to the lyric as well.”

“Marinaro weaves a spell that makes you forget about the outside world as you’re held captive by his talent.”   (TimeOut Chicago)

After studying music and performing in Upstate New York, Paul moved to Chicago in 2003, and has quickly made a name for himself, becoming one of the most in-demand male vocalists in the city.

Jazz vocalist Paul Marinaro enjoys being true to himself and to the material he sings.  From swing to torch, from the classics to the contemporary, Paul’s warm baritone voice is filled with nuance, wit, and taste. While his vocal style is peppered with traces of his influences, he has successfully forged his own sound and personality. His performances all possess a fresh, playful, and inventive sense of rhythm and melody, and an expansive repertoire.

In Chicago, Paul has been featured at many venues, yet it was a well received 2005 performance alongside Chicago favorite Judy Roberts that forged a musical partnership for the next two years.  Paul and Judy quickly became one of Chicago’s most acclaimed duo’s, appearing frequently throughout the city.

Being a reluctant member of Generation X, Paul unfortunately missed the chance to see many of the “Great Ones” who came before him.  However, he is thrilled to currently have the chance to be working alongside some of Chicago’s best musicians.  Paul can be seen weekly at various venues, most currently with pianist Chris White, and bassist Joe Policastro.

SOUL/FUNK DANCE PARTY

Bill McFarland & The Chicago Horns ($7 Cover)

Bill McFarland and The Chicago Horns have been one of the most prolific horn sections in blues and jazz for the last ten years. Trumpet player Kenny Anderson is a long standing professional who is well known and one of the leading Salsa performers from the Chicago music scene. Hank Ford on Saxophone has played with all the great performers of blues and jazz. He has played with Aretha Franklin, Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield and has played on the "Wiz" and Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Ladies" stage shows. Band leader and founder Bill McFarland has played on the late, great Albert Collin's "Frostbite" album and on Fenton Robinson's and Lonnie Brooks' albums and has played live with Aretha Franklin, Etta James and Otis Clay just to name a few. He is the director and the driving force of The Chicago Horns. "This band's taut rhythms, its front line's muscular quality and its rhythm section's aggressiveness make The Chicago Horns sound more like a small jazz symphony than the hard-hitting sextet it is." Truly, Bill McFarland and The Chicago Horns are now the top horn section in the blues and jazz world.

Katerina’s is excited
to welcome back
Kimberly Gordon
in the time slot that was originally created for her.

"If sapphires could sing I imagine they would have a similar sound...She thinks like a musician...this approach allows her to showcase her round, dusky, indigo voice."

-- Neal Tesser, Playboy's Guide to Jazz

“Gordon's voice soars the Chicago skyline as much as
it walks the dark and cold streets..."

-- Roots and Rhythm Magazine

Chicago native Kimberly Gordon has been a part of the national jazz scene for over ten years, playing top venues and receiving high acclaim from critics and musicians. During her four-year stint in New York City, Kimberly's sang at The Village Vanguard, Bradley's and Sweet Basil and regularly at Smalls and Cleopatra's Needle. She shared the stage with jazz greats including Roy Hargrove, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Wynton Marsalis and The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Betty Carter, Marcus Roberts, Captain Jack McDuff, Von Freeman, and others. San Francisco and the Bay Area jazz fans were dazzled when Kimberly sang at the Club Deluxe and Café du Nord.

In her hometown Kimberly performs regularly at the Chicago Jazz Festival and at all the hot spots including The Jazz Showcase, Katerina's, The Hot House, Andy's Jazz and The world renowned Green Mill Lounge where she has been holding court for nine years on Thursdays with The Swing Shift Orchestra and seven years on Sunday nights (a coveted spot), now featuring her Hammond B-3 Organ Trio with Chris Foreman on the B-3, and Andy Brown on Guitar.

Most recently Kimberly has been showcasing her American Composer and Lyricist Series, and Jazz Masters Series. Coinciding with the aforementioned birthdays, she takes the listener on a historical journey through their life and music. George and Ira Gershwin featuring the libretto Porgy and Bess, Harold Arlen, Duke Ellington, T. Monk, Johnny Mercer, Cole Porter, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan,  and Carmen McCrae are just a small sampling of artists celebrated.

Whenever the Kimberly Gordon Trio performs, Kimberly literally holds a jazz clinic: she has a unique talent that allows her to sing and tutor her audience simultaneously. She alternates her singing with rich explanations of each song's origin, its context within a particular film, or its relevance within jazz history.

Kimberlys' sound reflects the old school style of delivering standards. She is deeply rooted in the ways of the masters always true to the melody as written; this separates her from the rest.
